Flavour (particle Physics) - Conservation Laws

Conservation Laws

Absolutely conserved flavour quantum numbers are

  • electric charge (Q)
  • weak isospin (I3)
  • baryon number (B)
  • lepton number (L)

In some theories, the individual baryon and lepton number conservation can be violated, if the difference between them (BL) is conserved (see chiral anomaly). All other flavour quantum numbers are violated by the electroweak interactions. Strong interactions conserve all flavours.

Famous quotes containing the words conservation and/or laws:

A country grows in history not only because of the heroism of its troops on the field of battle, it grows also when it turns to justice and to right for the conservation of its interests.
    Aristide Briand (1862–1932)

The improvements of ages have had but little influence on the essential laws of man’s existence: as our skeletons, probably, are not to be distinguished from those of our ancestors.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
