Flag of Tenerife - Significance

Significance

There is no official meaning to justify the colours of the flag, but blue and white colours have been identified on the island of Tenerife for centuries. Traditionally, navy blue has been identified with the sea and the white to the snow covered peaks of Mount Teide and winter.

Both the old names that different cultures have given Tenerife as the current referral is made to the target. Juba II and Ancient Romans referred to Tenerife as Nivaria, derived from the Latin words nix, nivis or nives, meaning snow, in clear reference to the snow-covered peak of the Teide volcano. The benehaorits (natives of La Palma) derived from the words Tene ("mountain") and ife ("white"), from where the current name of Tenerife.

Famous quotes containing the word significance:

Politics is not an end, but a means. It is not a product, but a process. It is the art of government. Like other values it has its counterfeits. So much emphasis has been placed upon the false that the significance of the true has been obscured and politics has come to convey the meaning of crafty and cunning selfishness, instead of candid and sincere service.
    Calvin Coolidge (1872–1933)

To grasp the full significance of life is the actor’s duty, to interpret it is his problem, and to express it his dedication.
    Marlon Brando (b. 1924)
