Flag of Saint Pierre and Miquelon

The flag of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon is the flag of France as Saint-Pierre and Miquelon is a self-governing overseas collectivity of France.

There is an unofficial local flag (created in 1982), which is blue with a yellow ship, said to be the Grande Hermine, which brought Jacques Cartier to Saint-Pierre on 15 June 1536. Three square fields placed along the hoist recall the origin of most inhabitants of the islands, from top to bottom, Basques, Bretons, and Lower Normans. The top left flag is the Basque flag, as mentioned above, and is known as the "Ikurriña". This unofficial flag was likely designed by André Paturel, a local business owner who adapted the coat of arms designed by one Léon Joner.

Famous quotes containing the words flag of, flag and/or saint:

    Swift blazing flag of the regiment,
    Eagle with crest of red and gold,
    These men were born to drill and die.
    Point for them the virtue of slaughter,
    Make plain to them the excellence of killing
    And a field where a thousand corpses lie.
    Stephen Crane (1871–1900)

    Up rose old Barbara Frietchie then,
    Bowed with her fourscore years and ten;

    Bravest of all in Frederick town,
    She took up the flag the men hauled down;
    John Greenleaf Whittier (1807–1892)

    Child in the womb,
    Or saint on a tomb
    Which way shall I lie
    To fall asleep?
    Philip Larkin (1922–1986)
