Flag of Israel - Orthodox Jewish Opposition

Orthodox Jewish Opposition

Rabbi Moses Feinstein called the Israel flag "a foolish and meaningless object" and discouraged it being displayed in synagogues. Former Sephardic chief rabbi of Israel, Ovadia Yosef, forbade the flying of the Israeli flag in the synagogue. The Chazon Ish went further to forbid entry into a synagogue decorated with an Israeli flag even if there is no other synagogue in the area.

Famous quotes containing the words orthodox, jewish and/or opposition:

All orthodox opinion—that is, today, “revolutionary” opinion either of the pure or the impure variety—is anti-man.
    Wyndham Lewis (1882–1957)

I know that I will always be expected to have extra insight into black texts—especially texts by black women. A working-class Jewish woman from Brooklyn could become an expert on Shakespeare or Baudelaire, my students seemed to believe, if she mastered the language, the texts, and the critical literature. But they would not grant that a middle-class white man could ever be a trusted authority on Toni Morrison.
Claire Oberon Garcia, African American scholar and educator. Chronicle of Higher Education, p. B2 (July 27, 1994)

I fear the popular notion of success stands in direct opposition in all points to the real and wholesome success. One adores public opinion, the other, private opinion; one, fame, the other, desert; one, feats, the other, humility; one, lucre, the other, love; one, monopoly, and the other, hospitality of mind.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
