In 2010, the Flag Institute with the Flags and Heraldry Committee published a guide to Britain′s flag protocol, Flying Flags in the United Kingdom (ISBN 978-0-9513286-1-3). This booklet describes the correct protocol for flying flags on buildings, indoors, on parade, on vehicles and at half-mast. It was distributed to every national and local government department, police, fire and ambulance service. It is also available to download from the Flag Institute′s website and from several local government websites. This guide is seen as authoritative by the British Government.
