First Great Western - Management and Operations

Management and Operations

First Great Western has three major depots:

  • Old Oak Common TMD, 2 miles (3.2 km) from Paddington
  • Laira TMD in Plymouth
  • St Philip's Marsh T&RSMD, near Bristol Temple Meads

There are smaller carriage cleaning depots at Penzance, Landore and Exeter.

The current Managing Director of First Great Western is Mark Hopwood, who replaced Andrew Haines in December 2008. Sir Chay Blyth is chairman.

All on-train staff have DNA swab kits available, to help to identify passengers who commit crimes, for example spitting at staff.

It may seem strange that any road through such a wilderness should be passable, even in winter, when the snow is three or four feet deep, but at that season, wherever lumbering operations are actively carried on, teams are continually passing on the single track, and it becomes as smooth almost as a railway.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
