Famous quotes containing the words fire, service and/or exploring:

While there we heard the Indian fire his gun twice.... This sudden, loud, crashing noise in the still aisles of the forest, affected me like an insult to nature, or ill manners at any rate, as if you were to fire a gun in a hall or temple.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Books can only reveal us to ourselves, and as often as they do us this service we lay them aside.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Infants and young children are not just sitting twiddling their thumbs, waiting for their parents to teach them to read and do math. They are expending a vast amount of time and effort in exploring and understanding their immediate world. Healthy education supports and encourages this spontaneous learning.
    David Elkind (20th century)
