- ST = saddle tank locomotive
- STT = saddle tank locomotive with tender
- VBT = tank locomotive with vertical boiler
- B-Bd = diesel locomotive with two 4-wheel bogies
- 4wd = 4 wheel diesel locomotive with roller chain drive
- 0-6-0d = 6 wheel diesel locomotive with side rod drive
Describing chain-drive diesel locomotives as 4wd or 6wd, and side rod-drive diesel locomotives as 0-4-0 or 0-6-0, is a convention used by the Industrial Railway Society.
