Approximately 1 percent of children are affected by fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. However, rates reported in different studies strongly depend on the method used. Passive surveillance methods consistently result in lower rates of FAS, whereas clinic-based and active case ascertainment methods, especially when carried out in high-risk populations, result in the highest rates.
