Ferruginous Pygmy Owl - Dangers To The Species

Dangers To The Species

The northernmost subspecies cactorum, popularly called the Cactus Ferruginous Pygmy Owl, was listed as Endangered under the ESA. This refers to its range in the south-central portion of Arizona in the USA, where its range extended over the border from Sonora, Mexico. It was delisted in 2006. The reasons for this are loss of habitat and buffel grass. This grass catches fire very easy and spreads to the cacti and burns the owl's primary habitat. In Central America and South America, it is the most widely distributed pygmy owl and is probably one of the most numerous owl species in those areas.

Fearlessness is a more than ordinary strength of mind, which raises the soul above the troubles, disorders, and emotions which the prospect of great dangers are used to produce. And by this inward strength it is that heroes preserve themselves in a calm and quiet state, and enjoy a presence of mind and the free use of their reason in the midst of those terrible accidents that amaze and confound other people.
François, Duc De La Rochefoucauld (1613–1680)

The further our civilization advances upon its present lines so much the cheaper sort of thing does “fame” become, especially of the literary sort. This species of “fame” a waggish acquaintance says can be manufactured to order, and sometimes is so manufactured.
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)
