Fern Ridge High School

Fern Ridge High School is a non-traditional high school in Unincorporated St. Louis County, St. Louis County, Missouri. The school's motto is "Because it matters." Chiseled down to basics, this school is meant for people who have difficulty with the class sizes or that are on the 'just barely passing' level at a normal, traditional school. The Parkway School District operates the alternative high school and ensures that individual attention is provided by limiting enrollment to a maximum of 100 students. Students must choose to come to Fern Ridge. They cannot be sent by their parents, the court system, or district officials. In their applications and interviews for admission, prospective students must demonstrate needs that can't be met at a regular school. Every student is assigned a mentor, with each faculty member acting as a mentor to about ten students (this group is referred to as a "huddle").

Famous quotes containing the words ridge, high and/or school:

    The light passes
    from ridge to ridge,
    from flower to flower.
    Hilda Doolittle (1886–1961)

    And since our Daintie age,
    Cannot indure reproofe,
Make not thy selfe a Page,
    To that strumpet the Stage,
    But sing high and aloofe,
Safe from the wolves black jaw, and the dull Asses hoofe.
    Ben Jonson (1572–1637)

The first rule of education for me was discipline. Discipline is the keynote to learning. Discipline has been the great factor in my life. I discipline myself to do everything—getting up in the morning, walking, dancing, exercise. If you won’t have discipline, you won’t have a nation. We can’t have permissiveness. When someone comes in and says, “Oh, your room is so quiet,” I know I’ve been successful.
Rose Hoffman, U.S. public school third-grade teacher. As quoted in Working, book 8, by Studs Terkel (1973)
