Female Figures in The Quran - Daughters of Lot

Daughters of Lot

The Qur'an speaks of them in suras 11 (Hud) and 15 (Al-Hijr):

And his people came rushing towards him and they had been long in the habit of practising abominations. He said: "O my people! Here are my daughters: they are purer for you (if ye marry). They said: "Well dost thou know we have no need of thy daughters: indeed thou knowest quite well what we want!" —Qur'an, Sura 11 (Hud), ayat 79

Suddenly, through birthing a daughter, a woman finds herself face to face not only with an infant, a little girl, a woman-to- be, but also with her own unresolved conflicts from the past and her hopes and dreams for the future.... As though experiencing an earthquake, mothers of daughters may find their lives shifted, their deep feelings unearthed, the balance struck in all relationships once again off kilter.
    Elizabeth Debold (20th century)

Why, clean water was just something you took for granted.
    Sarah Delany (b. 1890)
