Feilden Stakes

The Feilden Stakes is a Listed flat horse race in Great Britain open to three-year-old thoroughbreds. It is run on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket over a distance of 1 mile and 1 furlong (1,811 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in mid April.

The race used to be called the Gerry Feilden Stakes, but it has been known by its present shortened title since 1987. It sometimes serves as a Classic trial, and the last participant to achieve victory in the Epsom Derby was Erhaab, the runner-up in 1994.

At present, the Feilden Stakes is held on the opening day of Newmarket's two-day Craven Meeting, one day before the Craven Stakes.

Famous quotes containing the word stakes:

This man was very clever and quick to learn anything in his line. Our tent was of a kind new to him; but when he had once seen it pitched, it was surprising how quickly he would find and prepare the pole and forked stakes to pitch it with, cutting and placing them right the first time, though I am sure that the majority of white men would have blundered several times.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
