Fathers' Rights Movement in The USA - Protests, Rallies, Symposia and Activists - Barry County Equal Parenting Symposium

Barry County Equal Parenting Symposium

This symposium took place in June 2007. Carol Rhodes, Author of "Friend of the Court Enemy of the Family", explained that as a Friend of the Court worker, she was instructed to violate the law and lie to fathers and mothers. Jay Fedewa, Executive Director of Family Rights Coalition, discussed the status of Michigan family law. Lary Holland claimed that Federal Title IV-D Funding obstructs equal parenting. He explained that Title IV-D funding created a financial incentive for the Michigan Friend of the Court and other state child support enforcement agencies to create problems between parents, triggering enforcement actions for which they could collect federal dollars. Holland advocated Title IV-D reform, including income eligibility requirements to focus child support collections on low income children who he stated were being "drowned out" by a focus on collections for middle-income and high-income families. He argued that funding issues were a significant factor in preventing state legislatures from passing equal parenting bills. Michigan Representatives Glen Steil, Rick Jones and Fulton Sheen advocated equal parenting. Robert Pedersen discussed equal parenting and a bike trek for equal parenting.

But whether on the scaffold high,

The fittest place where man can die
Is where he dies for man.
    —Michael J. Barry (1817–1889)

A horse, a buggy and several sets of harness, valued in all at about $250, were stolen last night from the stable of Howard Quinlan, near Kingsville. The county police are at work on the case, but so far no trace of either thieves or booty has been found.
    —H.L. (Henry Lewis)

Do not gain basely; base gain is equal to ruin.
    Hesiod (c. 8th century B.C.)

The ideal of men and women sharing equally in parenting and working is a vision still. What would it be like if women and men were less different from each other, if our worlds were not so foreign? A male friend who shares daily parenting told me that he knows at his very core what his wife’s loving for their daughter feels like, and that this knowing creates a stronger bond between them.
—Anonymous Mother. Ourselves and Our Children, by Boston Women’s Health Book Collective, ch. 6 (1978)

Plato’s Symposium shows that flirtation and philosophy can further one another.
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)
