Critics
This view has been criticized by many analytic philosophers and scientists. However recently cosmologist Stephen Hawking in The Grand Design has advocated model-dependent realism, which bears close resemblance to a relativist position, as a means of reconciling apparent inconsistencies between different iterations of M-Theory.
Larry Laudan's book Science and Relativism outlines the various philosophical points of view on the subject in the form of a dialogue.

Famous quotes containing the word critics:
“I have been a soreheaded occupant of a file drawer labeled Science Fiction ... and I would like out, particularly since so many serious critics regularly mistake the drawer for a urinal.”
—Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. (b. 1922)
“Nature, when she invented, manufactured, and patented her authors, contrived to make critics out of the chips that were left.”
—Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. (18091894)
“With a few exceptions, the critics of childrens books are remarkably lenient souls.... Most of us assume there is something good in every child; the critics go from this to assume there is something good in every book written for a child. It is not a sound theory.”
—Katharine S. White (18921977)
