Each entry released in the series has received mixed to positive reviews. Final Fantasy XIII, despite the controversy it garnered for its highly linear gameplay style, broke sales records for the franchise and eventually went on to sell over 6 million units. Its sequel XIII-2 received a more positive reception, though the story was criticized.
