Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy - Creation and Development

Creation and Development

The concept of Fabula Nova Crystallis was created by Yoshinori Kitase. This concept was then written as a full mythology by Kazushige Nojima. Square Enix president Yoichi Wada likened Fabula Nova Crystallis to that of the likes of Star Wars and has stated that it could span a decade. Final Fantasy XIII director Motomu Toriyama stated in the PlayStation Magazine Australia that the Fabula Nova Crystallis series is slated to be a multi-platform series, not exclusive only to the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PSP. In 2010, Yoshinori Kitase hinted that there were even more games on the way for the series, though this has yet to be substantiated.

The only games known to be in development within the Fabula Nova Crystallis series are Final Fantasy Versus XIII for PlayStation 3 and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. The development for each title is being handled within Square Enix through separate teams. This is reflected in the approach to making each title independent from the others while sharing a common backdrop. However, the character designs for the three officially revealed games are by Tetsuya Nomura, who is also the director of Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Each title will have its own style of gameplay: Final Fantasy XIII is an RPG, Final Fantasy Versus XIII is more action-oriented (similar to Kingdom Hearts) and Final Fantasy Type-0 is an action-RPG (similar to Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII) with multiplayer elements (though Square Enix have said that it is not an MMORPG). Final Fantasy XIII-2 is a direct sequel to the first title in the series Final Fantasy XIII, while Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, a second sequel to XIII, is focused on one playable character, has a time limit and seemingly harks back to the open world system of earlier games. Another rumored entry in the series, apparently titled Final Fantasy Haeresis XIII, was seemingly confirmed to have been discarded when its trademark expired in 2011 and Square Enix did not renew.

Famous quotes containing the words creation and/or development:

A fact is the end or last issue of spirit. The visible creation is the terminus or the circumference of the invisible world.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

The proper aim of education is to promote significant learning. Significant learning entails development. Development means successively asking broader and deeper questions of the relationship between oneself and the world. This is as true for first graders as graduate students, for fledging artists as graying accountants.
    Laurent A. Daloz (20th century)
