Eye Exams For Children
See also: pediatric ophthalmologyChildren should have their first eye exam at 6 months old. If a parent suspects something is wrong an ophthalmologist can check even earlier.
Early eye exams are important because children need the following basic visual skills for learning:
- Near vision
- Distance vision: Tumbling E chart, Landolt C chart
- Eye teaming (binocularity)
- Eye movement
- Accommodation (focusing skills)
- Peripheral vision
- Eye–hand coordination
Because of the importance of eye exams before students begin school, the Ontario Association of Optometrists started the Eye See...Eye Learn program in Ontario after it was successfully launched in Alberta in 2003. The program provides OHIP insured eye exams and free eyeglasses to Junior Kindergarten children in participating regions. Currently the program is being offered in the following regions for the 2010/2011 year: Halton, Hamilton-Wentworth, Peel and Windsor-Essex.

Famous quotes containing the words eye, exams and/or children:
“Will this thought rise on those who will meet my face no more,
He was one who had an eye for such mysteries?”
—Thomas Hardy (18401928)
“I know that if Id had to go and take an exam for acting, I wouldnt have got anywhere. You dont take exams for acting, you take your courage.”
—Dame Edith Evans (18881976)
“One of the most difficult aspects of being a parent during the middle years is feeling powerless to protect our children from hurt. However growthful it may be for them to experience failure, disappointment and rejection, it is nearly impossible to maintain an intellectual perspective when our sobbing child or rageful child comes in to us for help. . . . We cant turn the hurt around by kissing the sore spot to make it better. We are no longer the all-powerful parent.”
—Ruth Davidson Bell (20th century)
