Extinct Kannada Literature

Extinct Kannada literature is a hypothesized body of literature of the Kannada language dating from the period preceding the first extant work, Kavirajamarga (ca. 850 CE).

Although no works of this period are available now, references to them are found in the Kavirajamarga and a handful of other extant works. Some scholars have hypothesized that a body of literature must have existed in an earlier period, other scholars, however, have disputed this assertion, claiming that the putative body of literature, if it existed, was contemporaneous to Kavirajamarga.

Famous quotes containing the words extinct and/or literature:

One realises, with horror, that the race of men is almost extinct in Europe. Only Christ-like heroes and woman-worshipping Don Juans, and rabid equality-mongrels. The old, hardy, indomitable male is gone.
    —D.H. (David Herbert)

What makes literature interesting is that it does not survive its translation. The characters in a novel are made out of the sentences. That’s what their substance is.
    Jonathan Miller (b. 1936)
