Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol - Weaknesses

Weaknesses

In-band binary data transfer is inefficient
Because XMPP is not yet encoded as Efficient XML Interchange but as a long-lived XML stream, binary data must be first base64 encoded before it can be transmitted in-band. Therefore any significant amount of binary data (e.g., file transfers) is best transmitted out-of-band, using in-band messages to coordinate. The best example of this is the Jingle XMPP Extension Protocol, XEP-0166.

Famous quotes containing the word weaknesses:

A doctor, like anyone else who has to deal with human beings, each of them unique, cannot be a scientist; he is either, like the surgeon, a craftsman, or, like the physician and the psychologist, an artist.... This means that in order to be a good doctor a man must also have a good character, that is to say, whatever weaknesses and foibles he may have, he must love his fellow human beings in the concrete and desire their good before his own.
    —W.H. (Wystan Hugh)

What is called an acute knowledge of human nature is mostly nothing but the observer’s own weaknesses reflected back from others.
    —G.C. (Georg Christoph)

One of the weaknesses in the cooperative is that it has never been sufficiently leavened by the imagination. This is a quick-silver faculty, and likely to be a cause of worry to any collective settlement.
    Edward Dahlberg (1900–1977)
