Exodus (The New Power Generation Album)

Exodus (The New Power Generation Album)

Exodus is a 1995 album by The New Power Generation. While their previous album, Goldnigga was more hip-hop oriented, Exodus is more of a pure funk offering, strongly influenced by the sound of Parliament and P-Funk. Although the tracklist boasts 21 tracks, many of them are narrative segues, leaving only nine actual songs. Of those, one is an instrumental. The album spawned three singles, however only one was released in the U.S.

This album still downplays Prince's involvement in the band, with "Tora Tora", another in the long line of Prince's personas, as a background vocalist whose face is covered with a red veil (evidenced in the video of "The Good Life"). The front man for the NPG on this release is bass player Sonny T. who handles the lead vocals. Prince does provide lead vocals on 2 tracks, "Return of the Bump Squad" and "The Exodus Has Begun" using manipulated vocals and is clearly present on many of the spoken segues, although sometimes using a disguised accent.

Famous quotes containing the words exodus, power and/or generation:

    O my Lord, please send someone else.
    Bible: Hebrew, Exodus 4:13.

    Moses.

    ‘Tis not such lines as almost crack the stage
    When Bajazet begins to rage;
    Nor a tall met’phor in the bombast way,
    Nor the dry chips of short-lunged Seneca.
    Nor upon all things to obtrude
    And force some odd similitude.
    What is it then, which like the power divine
    We only can by negatives define?
    Abraham Cowley (1618–1667)

    I think one of the nicest things that we created as a generation was just the fact that we could say, Hey, I don’t like white people.
    Nikki Giovanni (b. 1943)
