Thomas Kelly played lock for Exeter Rugby Club and is the only player from the team to have captained England. He led the English team to a 19–0 victory over France at the Stade Colombes in Paris on 1 January 1908.

In recent seasons a large effort has been made by the club to gain promotion to the Guinness Premiership this was typified by the recruitment in the 2007/08 off season when the club acquired the services of many seasoned professionals.

The Chiefs also reached the final of the EDF Energy Trophy (formerly the Powergen Shield) in four of the seven seasons from 2002 to 2008, but finished runners-up on each occasion.

They now play in the Aviva Premiership as they beat Bristol 29–10 at the Memorial Stadium in a playoff on 26 May 2010, their first ever time in the top flight of English Rugby.

The supporters of Exeter Chiefs chant the Tomahawk Chop during matches, often accompanied by drums.
