Site History and Construction

The land on which the tower stands is owned by the historic Weld Club, a gentlemen's club located at the rear of the site, at the corner of Barrack Street and The Esplanade. The land was leased by the Weld Club to the tower's developers for 135 years.

The building was the result of a 50–50 joint venture between Westpac subsidiary Australian Guarantee Corporation and the Japanese C. Itoh and Shimizu. Construction on the building started during the 1980s property boom at a cost of between A$220 million and $230 million. The tower was built by Multiplex, topping out occurred in mid-1991 and construction completed in 1992.

Famous quotes containing the words site, history and/or construction:

I am not aware that any man has ever built on the spot which I occupy. Deliver me from a city built on the site of a more ancient city, whose materials are ruins, whose gardens cemeteries. The soil is blanched and accursed there, and before that becomes necessary the earth itself will be destroyed.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

... the history of the race, from infancy through its stages of barbarism, heathenism, civilization, and Christianity, is a process of suffering, as the lower principles of humanity are gradually subjected to the higher.
    Catherine E. Beecher (1800–1878)

There is, I think, no point in the philosophy of progressive education which is sounder than its emphasis upon the importance of the participation of the learner in the formation of the purposes which direct his activities in the learning process, just as there is no defect in traditional education greater than its failure to secure the active cooperation of the pupil in construction of the purposes involved in his studying.
    John Dewey (1859–1952)
