Ewell Castle School - Societies

Societies

At Ewell Castle, there are dozens of organisations known as societies, in many of which pupils come together to discuss a particular topic, presided over by a Master, the pupils fulfilling the role of 'Padowan'. The clubs range from Design, Sciences and Politics to Sports and recreation (e.g. Sailing, Duke of Edinburgh Award). In late 2008 a team from the school won first prize in the Epsom, Ewell and Banstead Schools’ Enterprise Challenge 2008.

Famous quotes containing the word societies:

It is fatally easy for Western folk, who have discarded chastity as a value for themselves, to suppose that it can have no value for anyone else. At the same time as Californians try to re-invent “celibacy,” by which they seem to mean perverse restraint, the rest of us call societies which place a high value on chastity “backward.”
    Germaine Greer (b. 1939)

Modern equalitarian societies ... whether democratic or authoritarian in their political forms, always base themselves on the claim that they are making life happier.... Happiness thus becomes the chief political issue—in a sense, the only political issue—and for that reason it can never be treated as an issue at all.
    Robert Warshow (1917–1955)

In societies where modern conditions of production prevail, all of life presents itself as an immense accumulation of spectacles. Everything that was directly lived has moved away into a representation.
    Guy Debord (b. 1931)
