European Short Course Swimming Championships 2004

The 8th European Short Course Swimming Championships was an international swimming meet organized by LEN, and held in Vienna, Austria, December 9-12, 2004. The meet featured teams from Europe, swimming in 38 short course events. It was held in Vienna's arena (Wiener Stadthalle), in a temporary pool.

During the championships, the LEN's 900th medal was awarded: the silver medal in the men's 100 backstroke. Also, long-serving, host-country swimmer Judith Draxler announced her retirement from competition. Drazler was given a rousing reception by her teammates and the crowd, and for her contributions to Austrian swimming was presented with the Golden Order of Merit of the Republic of Austria by the State Secretary for Sports Karl Schweitzer.

Famous quotes containing the words european, short and/or swimming:

    To the cry of “follow Mormons and prairie dogs and find good land,” Civil War veterans flocked into Nebraska, joining a vast stampede of unemployed workers, tenant farmers, and European immigrants.
    —For the State of Nebraska, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

    It is not growing like a tree
    In bulk, doth make man better be,
    Or standing long an oak, three hundred year,
    To fall a log at last, dry, bald, and sere:
    A lily of a day
    Is fairer far in May
    Although it fall and die that night;
    It was the plant and flower of light.
    In small proportions we just beauties see,
    And in short measures life may perfect be.
    Ben Jonson (1572–1637)

    Awareness of having better things to do with their lives is the secret to immunizing our children against false values—whether presented on television or in “real life.” The child who finds fulfillment in music or reading or cooking or swimming or writing or drawing is not as easily convinced that he needs recognition or power or some “high” to feel worthwhile.
