Famous quotes containing the words european, council and/or schools:

I can never suppose this country so far lost to all ideas of self-importance as to be willing to grant America independence; if that could ever be adopted I shall despair of this country being ever preserved from a state of inferiority and consequently falling into a very low class among the European States.
    George III (1738–1820)

Daughter to that good Earl, once President
Of England’s Council and her Treasury,
Who lived in both, unstain’d with gold or fee,
And left them both, more in himself content.

Till the sad breaking of that Parliament
Broke him, as that dishonest victory
    At Chaeronea, fatal to liberty,
Kill’d with report that old man eloquent;—
    John Milton (1608–1674)

The schools begin with what they call the elements, and where do they end?
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
