Ethnic Groups In The Middle East

The ethnic groups in West Asia fall into several categories:

  • The Middle East proper is dominated by the Arabs. There are various other ethnic groups, the Iranian peoples (primarily the Kurds), Turkic peoples (such as the Syrian and Iraqi Turkmens), Assyrians, and Jews.
  • Iran is mostly populated by Persians alongside a large minority of Turkic peoples (notably Azerbaijanis and Turkmens), Kurds, Balochs, Arabs and other minorities such as Armenians, Pashtuns and Assyrians.
  • Anatolia is mostly populated by Turks, besides minorities (notably Kurds).
  • Cyprus is populated by mainly by Greek and Turkish Cypriots.
  • The Caucasus has many ethnicities, see peoples of the Caucasus.

Famous quotes containing the words ethnic, groups, middle and/or east:

Motherhood is the second oldest profession in the world. It never questions age, height, religious preference, health, political affiliation, citizenship, morality, ethnic background, marital status, economic level, convenience, or previous experience.
    Erma Bombeck (20th century)

If we can learn ... to look at the ways in which various groups appropriate and use the mass-produced art of our culture ... we may well begin to understand that although the ideological power of contemporary cultural forms is enormous, indeed sometimes even frightening, that power is not yet all-pervasive, totally vigilant, or complete.
    Janice A. Radway (b. 1949)

On the middle of that quiet floor
sits a fleet of small black ships,
    square-rigged, sails furled, motionless,
    their spars like burned matchsticks.
    Elizabeth Bishop (1911–1979)

The majority of the men of the North, and of the South and East and West, are not men of principle. If they vote, they do not send men to Congress on errands of humanity; but while their brothers and sisters are being scourged and hung for loving liberty,... it is the mismanagement of wood and iron and stone and gold which concerns them.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
