Erode in general is characterised by scanty rainfall and a dry climate. The highest rainfall is recorded in Gobichettipalayam. The Palghat gap in the Western Ghats, which has a moderating effect on the climate of Coimbatore District, does not render much help in bringing down the temperature in this area. The cool wind that blows from the west coast through the Palghat gap loses its coolness and becomes hot and dry by the time it reaches the Erode region.

Erode has moderately dry weather throughout the year, except during the monsoon season. Generally the first two months of the year are pleasant, but in March, the mercury begins to rise, and this continues until the end of May. The highest temperature is normally recorded during May. The scanty showers during this period do not provide any relief from the oppressive heat. There is a slight improvement in the climate during June–August period. During this south-west monsoon period, the mercury reverses its trend and by September, the sky becomes overcast but the rains are meagre. The north-east monsoon sets in vigorously only during October–November and by December, the rains disappear rendering the climate clear but pleasant.

Famous quotes containing the words geography and, geography and/or climate:

The totality of our so-called knowledge or beliefs, from the most casual matters of geography and history to the profoundest laws of atomic physics or even of pure mathematics and logic, is a man-made fabric which impinges on experience only along the edges. Or, to change the figure, total science is like a field of force whose boundary conditions are experience.
Willard Van Orman Quine (b. 1908)

The California fever is not likely to take us off.... There is neither romance nor glory in digging for gold after the manner of the pictures in the geography of diamond washing in Brazil.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)

When we consider how much climate contributes to the happiness of our condition, by the fine sensation it excites, and the productions it is the parent of, we have reason to value highly the accident of birth in such a one as that of Virginia.
    Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826)
