As of 2001, the Indian census recorded a population of 156,953. Males constituted 51 per cent of the population and females 49 per cent. The average literacy rate of 88.39 per cent was higher than the national average of 75.06 per cent. Male literacy was 93.18 per cent and female literacy was 83.65 per cent. In Erode, 9 per cent of the population was under 6 years of age.
The provisional figures of the 2011 the Indian census indicate that Erode had a population of 706,529 with 186,637 households.
