Education
He attended Tome School as a young boy and entered Amherst College at age 16 where be received his BA in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army and after being discharged in 1947 resumed his studies receiving an MA (1948) and PhD (1954) both from Harvard University. He taught at the University of Chicago from 1950, where he is the Robert Maynard Hutchins Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus, Departments of Linguistics, Slavic Languages and Literatures, Psychology (Cognition and Communication) and the Committee on the Ancient Mediterranean World, until his retirement in 1991.
