Ensemble 48

Ensemble 48 is a new music octet created in the Fall of 2007 at Butler University's Jordan College of Fine Arts. It was started by six graduate-student composers who were not able to join Michael Schelle's Composers Orchestra due to a class conflict. The graduate students decided to join forces and create their own splinter ensemble to perform their new compositions at Butler. Since then, one founding member has left, and three new members have been added. They are now the guerrilla ensemble-in-residence of Composers Orchestra. They have since moved on to performing throughout the midwest, taking part in the 2008 and 2009 Indy Fringe Festival, and improvising soundtracks to classic silent films such as Man with a Movie Camera and Nosferatu at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Their standard instrumentation is lead guitar, rhythm guitar, tenor/electric bass, piano, violin/viola, cello, double bass, and percussion.
