Enfield Shaker Museum - Great Stone Dwelling House

Great Stone Dwelling House

The Great Stone Dwelling houses the gift shop and the primary exhibition space. The dwelling was the largest Shaker dwelling house ever built, and was constructed 1837-1841. The building was designed to house over 150 Shakers. The building was designed by Ammi Burnham Young, designer of the second state capitol in Vermont and later the first supervising architect for the United States Treasury. The granite stonework on the exterior and the slate roof were constructed by stonemasons from Boston. The Shaker brothers constructed the rest of the building themselves.

Famous quotes containing the words stone, dwelling and/or house:

Men admire the man who can organize their wishes and thoughts in stone and wood and steel and brass.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

The birds that came to it through the air
At broken windows flew out and in,
Their murmur more like the sigh we sigh
From too much dwelling on what has been.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

Within the memory of many of my townsmen the road near which my house stands resounded with the laugh and gossip of inhabitants, and the woods which border it were notched and dotted here and there with their little gardens and dwellings, though it was then much more shut in by the forest than now.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
