Energy in Saudi Arabia - Natural Gas

Natural Gas

Saudi Arabia has the world's fourth largest reserves of natural gas, of 240 trillion cubic feet (6.8 trillion cubic metres). One-third of this reserve is found in the Ghawar. Before the master gas system, the oil company flared (burn) the gas as it came from the oil well. Until recently production of natural gas was tightly controlled as it is so closely linked to oil production. The World Trade Organization criticized the government and Aramco for heavily subsidizing natural gas. According to the Energy Information Administration the price was $0.75 MMBtu American dollars.

Famous quotes containing the words natural and/or gas:

The open frontier, the hardships of homesteading from scratch, the wealth of natural resources, the whole vast challenge of a continent waiting to be exploited, combined to produce a prevailing materialism and an American drive bent as much, if not more, on money, property, and power than was true of the Old World from which we had fled.
    Barbara Tuchman (1912–1989)

    Droning a drowsy syncopated tune,
Rocking back and forth to a mellow croon,
    I heard a Negro play.

Down on Lenox Avenue the other night
By the pale dull pallor of an old gas light
    Langston Hughes (1902–1967)
