Endogenous Retrovirus
Endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) are inactive DNA sequences in the genome of humans and other vertebrates, derived from ancient retroviral infections. These defective proviruses comprise a significant part of the human genome and are passed on to progeny through the germ line. They have no known biological function.
