Emily, Lady Peel

Emily, Lady Peel (1836-4 April 1924) was the daughter of George Hay, 8th Marquess of Tweeddale and of Lady Susan Montagu.

On 17 June 1853 she married Sir Robert Peel, 3rd Baronet, the eldest son of prime minister Sir Robert Peel, 2nd Baronet. They had one son left Robert, born in 1867, who succeeded to the baronetcy, and three daughters.

Lady Peel was interested in dog racing and bred several award winning borzoi. French Rosarian François Lacharme named a rose cultivar after her.

Lady Peel died on April 4, 1924.

Famous quotes containing the word lady:

I spoke at a woman’s club in Philadelphia yesterday and a young lady said to me afterwards, “Well, that sounds very nice, but don’t you think it is better to be the power behind the throne?” I answered that I had not had much experience with thrones, but a woman who has been on a throne, and who is now behind it, seems to prefer to be on the throne.
