Elsie Jane Wilson

Elsie Jane Wilson (November 7, 1890 - January 16, 1965) was a cinema actress, director and writer.

Wilson was born in New Zealand. A professional actress from the age of two, she followed her husband Rupert Julian to United States in 1913, where both found work as actors in Universal silent movies. He turned to directing, with Wilson functioning as his co-director. Later, she appeared in Oliver Twist (1916) and other Paramount movies, then in 1917 returned to Universal and started her directional career, mainly in light comedies.

According to the reviews of the day, Wilson was a modest filmmaker, being best appreciated for eliciting good performances from otherwise indifferent talent. Nevertheless, few women directors sustained careers in the 1920s, and she directed ten movies between 1917 and 1919.

Elsie Jane Wilson died in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 74.

Famous quotes containing the words jane and/or wilson:

I want the kind of job that is interesting but doesn’t take very much time.
Anonymous 14-year-old, U.S. niece of author Jane O’Reilly. As quoted in The Girl I Left Behind, ch. 7, by Jane O’Reilly (1980)

There is a very holy and a very terrible isolation for the conscience of every man who seeks to read the destiny in affairs for others as well as for himself, for a nation as well as for individuals. That privacy no man can intrude upon. That lonely search of the spirit for the right perhaps no man can assist.
    —Woodrow Wilson (1856–1924)
