Ellen Browning Scripps - Abroad For Family Health

Abroad For Family Health

Edward’s health was precarious during this time and his doctors encouraged him to travel abroad. Ellen offered to go with him on this trip. They went to Algeria, Italy, Germany, Paris and other places in Europe. Ellen wrote letters back to the Penny Press about their travels and thus became the first foreign correspondent. Upon returning to America Ellen became a women's rights activist after seeing how women in these other countries were treated. Ellen returned to her copy-editing job at the Detroit News, but it was not the same after her absence and she left shortly after. She went to Cuba in 1884 with Edward and sister Annie to sightsee. She returned home and soon after James was sick with gallbladder problems. Ellen and James traveled Italy to regain his health. While they were gone Edward’s son was stillborn and he was devastated.

Famous quotes containing the words family and/or health:

If you are a genius and unsuccessful, everybody treats you as if you were a genius, but when you come to be successful, when you commence to earn money, when you are really successful, then your family and everybody no longer treats you like a genius, they treat you like a man who has become successful.
    Pablo Picasso (1881–1973)

Publicity in women is detestable. Anonymity runs in their blood. The desire to be veiled still possesses them. They are not even now as concerned about the health of their fame as men are, and, speaking generally, will pass a tombstone or a signpost without feeling an irresistible desire to cut their names on it.
    Virginia Woolf (1882–1941)
