Elections in Alaska - Political Parties

Political Parties

There are four qualified political parties.

  • Democratic Party (see also Alaska Democratic Party)
  • Libertarian Party
  • Republican Party (see also Alaska Republican Party)
  • Alaskan Independence Party

Lawsuits launched by Joe Vogler and Jim Sykes, among other lawsuits, led the Alaska Legislature to eventually revamp and relax laws pertaining to party status and ballot access. The first instance of a minor party gaining recognition came in 1982, when the gubernatorial candidacy of Dick Randolph under the Libertarian Party was successful enough to meet the existing party recognition threshold.

Famous quotes containing the words political and/or parties:

Circumstances ... give in reality to every political principle its distinguishing colour and discriminating effect. The circumstances are what render every civil and political scheme beneficial or noxious to mankind.
    Edmund Burke (1729–1797)

A foreign minister, I will maintain it, can never be a good man of business if he is not an agreeable man of pleasure too. Half his business is done by the help of his pleasures: his views are carried on, and perhaps best, and most unsuspectedly, at balls, suppers, assemblies, and parties of pleasure; by intrigues with women, and connections insensibly formed with men, at those unguarded hours of amusement.
Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl Chesterfield (1694–1773)
