Sir Edwin H. C. Leather was born in Toronto, Canada. He was educated at Trinity College School, Port Hope. He graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario in 1937.
He was awarded an Honorary Degree (Doctor of Laws) from the University of Bath in 1976.
