Edmund M. Wheelwright - Boston's Fire Tower

Boston's Fire Tower

In 1892 Wheelwright designed and built a 156 foot tall tower in the South End of Boston, Massachusetts, which was originally designed as part of the central fire station and used as a fire lookout. Since Wheelwright wanted the building to stand out, it was modeled after the 14th century Torre del Mangia in Siena, Italy, and made of brick like the Italian original. It is the city's only Florentine-inspired building.

Famous quotes containing the words boston, fire and/or tower:

However strongly they resist it, our kids have to learn that as adults we need the companionship and love of other adults. The more direct we are about our needs, the easier it may be for our children to accept those needs. Their jealousy may come from a fear that if we adults love each other we might not have any left for them. We have to let them know that it’s a different kind of love.
—Ruth Davidson Bell. Ourselves and Our Children, by Boston Women’s Health Book Collective, ch. 3 (1978)

The fire in leaf and grass
    so green it seems
    each summer the last summer.
    Denise Levertov (b. 1923)

Thy nose is as the tower of Lebanon which looketh toward Damascus.
—Bible: Hebrew Song of Solomon, 7:4.
