Ed Palubinskas - Coaching Career

Coaching Career

Palubinskas began his coaching career in 1976 right after he graduated from Louisiana State University with a Bachelor's degree. After 2 years coaching in Baton Rouge, He became Head coach of the Bahraini National handball team while working for the United States Sports Academy where he developed a national curriculum for the sport of team handball. Upon returning to the States he decided to get his Masters degree with a thesis in Sports Art. The title of his thesis is "man's worst tragedy is his failure to reach his greatest potential". The thesis was basically an art project which weighed a half a ton which consisted of a mosaic tile art piece which took 400 hours to complete. Even more interesting was that the mosaic was created upside down and back to front before steel rebar was added before concrete was poured for strength and support. It took 10 men to lift it into place as it was installed in the halls of the marriott center at brigham young university. It was dedicated to the visual portrayal of man reaching his greatest potential and it was a 3-D rendition of athletes in different poses exhibiting maximum effort in their activity. For example, it shows a javelin thrower just prior to the release of the javelin, it shows 2 wrestlers intertwined like a pretzel trying to get an advantage. It shows a female jump shooter at the peak of her jump shot.

Immediately after graduating with honors, he got a coaching job in Sunnyside Utah as the Head coach at East Carbon High school. After a year there (where he almost lost his life in an almost fatal head on collision with a bridge due to black ice on the road which hospitalized him for 10 days after suffering a broken femur, broken humerus and broken ribs) he got the coveted job at East High School in Salt Lake City, Utah (where they just won the State championship) where he coached till 1986 then decided to take the assistant coach position at Brigham Young University in Hawaii, where he stayed only for a year due to an illness by his wife causing them to return to the mainland in Idaho to be near his wife's parents. After sitting out a couple years from coaching he got back in and became the Head coach at Mountain Home High School in Idaho where he stayed a few years before returning to Baton Rouge Louisiana in 1991. In 1992 He became the head coach at Central Private where he won 3 state championships over the next few years. He became a voluntary assistant coach at LSU during the 1991-92 season, helping the Tigers win a Southeastern Conference Championship that year.

After a four year campaign as the head coach at Central Private High School from 1992 to 1996, Palubinskas took a position as shooting coach to Shaquille O'Neal with the Los Angeles Lakers for the entire 2000-01 NBA season. Shaq's improved Free throw shooting helped lead the Lakers to the 2001 NBA Championship. He went from 38.3% to 69.4% with Ed's tutelage. Well worth the NBA championship ring they won together.

In 2006, he was commissioned to work with the National Olympic Australian women's team downunder. While most of the team was shooting in the low 70's, after 4 days most of the players were shooting above 90% with 2 BIGs shooting at 88% and 84%. This team went on to win the Gold medal at the world games. First time in history an Australian team ever won GOLD.

In 2010 Ed worked with Lauren Jackson the 6'5" Aussie superstar for the SEATTLE STORM WNBA national Champs. She won the MVP again and went on to shoot 90.3% from the line for the year.

In 2011 Ed once again took the Head coaching position reluctantly at Central Private School. Taking over a team that was 3-30 the year before to a 33-3 year under his tutelage. The 3 losses were by a combined total of 5 points.

In 2012 Ed was officially hired on to be the personal shooting coach for Dwight Howard who was the Orlando Magic franchise player and up and coming Superstar. This project is still under construction with a huge upside. When starting with Dwight there was 15 shooting flaws that needed correcting. So this will take a little longer but great things are in store.

In 2007 Ed started working with Brandon Bass who was around a 70% FT shooter with the New Orleans Hornets. In the meantime he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks, Then on to Orlando Magic and then to Boston Celtics where in 2012 he became the all time leading Free throw shooter in Celtic franchise History in NBA playoffs, beating legends like Bill Sharman, Ray Allen and Larry Bird. This he did shooting at 92.2% from the line using the Ed Palubinskas Smartball Shooting System which is technically wired to shooting perfection.

Another of his NBA clients is Marcus Thornton who plays for Sacramento Kings. He shot 86.5% from the line in the shortened 2011-2012 season.

Famous quotes containing the word career:

What exacerbates the strain in the working class is the absence of money to pay for services they need, economic insecurity, poor daycare, and lack of dignity and boredom in each partner’s job. What exacerbates it in upper-middle class is the instability of paid help and the enormous demands of the career system in which both partners become willing believers. But the tug between traditional and egalitarian models of marriage runs from top to bottom of the class ladder.
    Arlie Hochschild (20th century)
