The film received overwhelmingly negative reviews and was a box office disappointment. Based on 11 reviews, Ed was given a 0% "rotten" rating according to Rotten Tomatoes.

It received four Razzie Awards nominations for Worst Picture, Worst Screenplay (David M. Evans), and Worst Screen Couple (for LeBlanc and Ed the mechanical chimp), losing all of those categories to Striptease starring Demi Moore. It was also nominated for Golden Raspberry Award for Worst New Star for Matt LeBlanc, losing to Pamela Anderson in Barb Wire as Barb Wire.

At one point in the film Ed, the talented pitching chimp, is told to pitch at a baseball game. He then proceeds to give the opposing character the finger. This was taken negatively among critics considering the movie is under the PG rating.

Famous quotes containing the word reception:

Satire is a sort of glass, wherein beholders do generally discover everybody’s face but their own; which is the chief reason for that kind of reception it meets in the world, and that so very few are offended with it.
    Jonathan Swift (1667–1745)

But in the reception of metaphysical formula, all depends, as regards their actual and ulterior result, on the pre-existent qualities of that soil of human nature into which they fall—the company they find already present there, on their admission into the house of thought.
    Walter Pater (1839–1894)

To aim to convert a man by miracles is a profanation of the soul. A true conversion, a true Christ, is now, as always, to be made by the reception of beautiful sentiments.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
