2018/2022 World Cup Winning Bids

On 2 December 2010, Russia and Qatar were awarded the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, respectively.

The United States was a bidder for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, although questions were being raised about the US bid and whether its economic impact on the US would in fact be as favorable as promised (http://www.umbc.edu/economics/wpapers/wp_10_121.pdf). A new report argues that the US World Cup in 1994 lost billions of dollars despite a positive economic impact estimate, noted that the same company is creating the estimate for the current bid, and predicts that a 2022 US World Cup could again lose billions of dollars in lost income.

Famous quotes containing the words world, cup, winning and/or bids:

The world is neither wise nor just, but it makes up for all its folly and injustice by being damnably sentimental.
    Thomas Henry Huxley (1825–95)

There is not enough exercise in this way of life. I try to make up by active gymnastics before I dress when I get up, by walking rapidly in the lower hall and the greenhouse after each meal for perhaps five to ten minutes, and a good hand rubbing before going to bed. I eat moderately; drink one cup of coffee at breakfast and one cup of tea at lunch and no other stimulant. My health is now, and usually, excellent.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)

You with a bad coin in your socket,
You my friend there with a winning air
Who palmed the lie on me when you looked
Brassily at my shyest secret ...
    Dylan Thomas (1914–1953)

He bids you ... to take mercy
On the poor souls for whom this hungry war
    Opens his vasty jaws.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
