Eastern Kentucky Colonels And Lady Colonels
EKU fields teams in 15 varsity sports (7 men's and 8 women's). The school is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference in Division I of the NCAA (FCS in football), having been a part of the conference since its inception in 1948. The EKU Athletics Department is headed by Mark Sandy, who joined Eastern in 2005 from the University of Richmond.
EKU's intercollegiate athletics teams are nicknamed the Colonels and Lady Colonels (for Women's Basketball only). Since the school's inception as Eastern Kentucky State Normal School, maroon has been the official color of Eastern athletics. Prior to 1963, when then-president Robert Martin had the school's nickname changed to the "Colonels", the school's official nickname was the "Maroons".

Famous quotes containing the words eastern, kentucky and/or lady:
“The eastern light our spires touch at morning,
The light that slants upon our western doors at evening,
The twilight over stagnant pools at batflight,
Moon light and star light, owl and moth light,
Glow-worm glowlight on a grassblade.
O Light Invisible, we worship Thee!”
—T.S. (Thomas Stearns)
“The head must bow, and the back will have to bend,
Wherever the darkey may go;
A few more days, and the trouble all will end,
In the field where the sugar-canes grow.
A few more days for to tote the weary load,
No matter, t will never be light;
A few more days till we totter on the road:
Then my old Kentucky home, good-night!”
—Stephen Collins Foster (18261884)
“True Thomas lay on Huntlie bank;
A ferlie he spied wi his ee;
And there he saw a lady bright,
Come riding down by the Eildon Tree.”
—Unknown. Thomas the Rhymer (l. 14)
