East Reading

East Reading is a district of the town of Reading in the English county of Berkshire.

The district has no formal boundaries, but the name is generally used to refer to the area within the borough boundaries to the east of the city centre, to the south of the River Kennet, to the north of Whitley and to the west of Earley. As such it includes the densely populated area of Newtown, as well as the areas around London and Earley Roads, Cemetery Junction and the Wokingham Road as far as the borough boundary at the Three Tuns.

The Royal Berkshire Hospital and the University of Reading's London Road Campus lie on the district's western boundary, whilst the University of Reading's larger Whiteknights Campus is on the southern boundary. Both Reading College and the Thames Valley University are in the district, as is Reading School. The oldest building in the area is Watlington House, situated on Watlington Street.

Reading Buses operate frequent bus services along the Wokingham Road, and to the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

The district lies entirely within the borough of Reading, including all of Park ward together with parts of Abbey, and Redlands wards. The district lies in the Reading East parliamentary constituency.

Famous quotes containing the words east and/or reading:

Though all the East did quake to hear
    Of Alexander’s dreadful name,
And all the West likewise did fear
To hear of Julius Caesar’s fame,
    Robert Southwell (1561?–1595)

After all, what is reading but a vice, like drink or venery or any other form of excessive self-indulgence? One reads to tickle and amuse one’s mind; one reads, above all, to prevent oneself thinking.
    Aldous Huxley (1894–1963)
