East Peckham - Notable Persons

Notable Persons

  • On January 28, 1896 Walter Arnold, of East Peckham, was fined for speeding at 8 mph (13 km/h), thus exceeding the contemporary speed limit for towns of 2 mph (3.2 km/h). He was fined 1 shilling plus costs, the first speeding fine in England. He was the first person to be convicted of speeding in the UK. Arnold had been caught by a policeman who had given chase on a bicycle.

Famous quotes containing the words notable and/or persons:

    a notable prince that was called King John;
    And he ruled England with main and with might,
    For he did great wrong, and maintained little right.
    —Unknown. King John and the Abbot of Canterbury (l. 2–4)

    I begin, then, with some remarks about ‘the meaning of a word.’ I think many persons now see all or part of what I shall say: but not all do, and there is a tendency to forget, or to get it slightly wrong. In so far as I am merely flogging the converted, I apologize to them.
    —J.L. (John Langshaw)
