Ealdwulf Of East Anglia
Ealdwulf (or Aldwulf) was an obscure king of East Anglia who reigned from 663 to around 713.
Ealdwulf's reign of forty-nine years was extraordinary in length: only the reigns of Ethelbald of Mercia and Offa of Mercia are comparable. Far less is known of Ealdwulf than of either of these kings and his personal power in comparison, but his long rule reflects the success of the alliances that were set in train in the decades before his rule. The East Angles experienced a long period of stability and growth, not least in their commercial centre at Gipeswic (now modern Ipswich). Among wider struggles for authority, Ealdwulf held a strong position by means of the patronage of religious houses that were governed by his extended family.
Famous quotes containing the word east:
“We have a great deal more kindness than is ever spoken. Maugre all the selfishness that chills like east winds the world, the whole human family is bathed with an element of love like a fine ether.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
