After the East Asian Football Federation was formed in 2002, the East Asian Football Championship replaced this tournament.
In the men's tournament China, South Korea and Japan have the right to automatically enter the competition, while other participants have to go through a qualifying round. Other participants that take part are Chinese Taipei, North Korea, Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, Hong Kong, Mongolia, and Macau. Australia will be eligible to take part in the 2013 tournament.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“Yet poetry, though the last and finest result, is a natural fruit. As naturally as the oak bears an acorn, and the vine a gourd, man bears a poem, either spoken or done. It is the chief and most memorable success, for history is but a prose narrative of poetic deeds.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“Three million of such stones would be needed before the work was done. Three million stones of an average weight of 5,000 pounds, every stone cut precisely to fit into its destined place in the great pyramid. From the quarries they pulled the stones across the desert to the banks of the Nile. Never in the history of the world had so great a task been performed. Their faith gave them strength, and their joy gave them song.”
—William Faulkner (18971962)
