Eadwald of East Anglia - Background

Background

East Anglia was ruled by a single dynasty known as the Wuffingas from the 6th century until the reign of Ælfwald, who died in 749. After Ælfwald, the East Angles were ruled by a series of kings of unknown lineage, remaining independent until 794, when their king, Æthelberht, was beheaded in Mercia on the order of the Mercian king, Offa. From 794, Offa ruled East Anglia directly. East Anglia briefly strove for independence after 796, the year that Offa was succeeded by his son Ecgfrith, who himself died after a rule of only five months, to be succeeded by a distant kinsman, Coenwulf.
