History
The district was established by King Chulalongkorn, who wanted to escape the cluttered area of the Rattanakosin Island.
The Vimanmek Palace was constructed in 1900 completely out of teak, and was used as a royal palace for a short time, but was abandoned in 1908. Revived and reconstructed in 1992 it is now a major touristical attraction of the district.
Chitralada Palace was built by King Vajiravudh (Rama VI), and is still the residence of the King of Thailand. The large park around the palace is used by King Bhumibol Adulyadej for agricultural research.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“For a transitory enchanted moment man must have held his breath in the presence of this continent, compelled into an aesthetic contemplation he neither understood nor desired, face to face for the last time in history with something commensurate to his capacity for wonder.”
—F. Scott Fitzgerald (18961940)
“To care for the quarrels of the past, to identify oneself passionately with a cause that became, politically speaking, a losing cause with the birth of the modern world, is to experience a kind of straining against reality, a rebellious nonconformity that, again, is rare in America, where children are instructed in the virtues of the system they live under, as though history had achieved a happy ending in American civics.”
—Mary McCarthy (19121989)
“A people without history
Is not redeemed from time, for history is a pattern
Of timeless moments.”
—T.S. (Thomas Stearns)
